Commissioning Guide

high pressure mechanical seal

Before specifying a high pressure mechanical seal, resolve whether the named pressure, temperature and surface speed apply together on the proposed size and arrangement. Manufacturer pages for cartridge O-ring pusher seals such as the Type 5610 family show pressure in psi(g) or bar(g) changing with seal size in inches or millimetres. Do not copy a family’s separate maxima into one assumed simultaneous operating point. This guide is a decision dossier for procurement, not an engineering stamp or a compliance certificate.

Questions to resolve

Questions to resolve
Decision point Evidence or question
Questions to resolve: Sample run Which fluid and solids contact the faces and secondary seals at the high-pressure point, including transients and cleaning fluids? Which flush or quench plan is required at the specified pressure and temperature, and will the sample run use that plan or a water substitute?
Site readiness Are gland-bolt loads, barrier-fluid or flush-plan skid footprint, cooling water and connected load for any support cart already known? Is the chamber drawing dimensioned so a cartridge can be withdrawn without a pipe cut?
Owner acceptance Will leak-off, flush flow and chamber temperature be recorded against the same bar(g) or psi(g) used in the RFQ? FAT papers from a shop test are not SAT on the buyer fluid unless the contract says so.

Type 21 elastomer-bellows sheets are a useful reminder that limits depend on materials used; they are not a high-pressure cartridge rating. If the duty is actually a centrifugal pump chamber, continue on application checks. If manufacturer assumptions still differ, return to requirement review. Send the high-pressure brief when the three questions have draft answers. Fluid and chamber notes stay reference reading, not a commissioning procedure we perform.
